In electronic music, acid breaks is a fusion between breakbeat, acid, acid techno forms of Electronic dance music. Its drum line usually mimics most breakbeat music, lacking the distinctive kick drum of other forms of EDM. In addition, it usually has the high tones first produced by the TB-303 that is characteristic of acid music.

In early 1990's the UK squat party and free festival scene saw many DJ's mixing Acid Techno and later producers such as Divine Soma Experiment [1] started to experiment with more complex arrangements and techniques combining freestyle breakbeats and psychedelic (acid) techno.

The term "Acid" music derives from the word acid from Lysergic Acid or more commonly known as LSD as the music is intended to give users of this medicine an enhanced experience while listening or dancing to this music whilst on LSD.

One of the earliest synthesizers to be employed in acid music was the Roland TB303. This was probably due to its unique resonant cutoff filters that create powerful overtones and harmonics that can create trance like states and out of body experiences for its listeners. The overtone and harmonic effects on the consciousness can be compared to techniques employed by Tibetan monk chanting, aboriginal Australian use of didgeridoo to create "dreamtime states", Mongolian Choomi throat Overtone_singing of the Tuva people and many other tribal and ethnic music around the world.

This genre is also known as Big Beat. Since both genres rely heavily on distorted sounds and breakbeat drum lines.

The first acid breaks track is credited to Zak Baney in 1987 for his track "Acid Break".
