*David Bowie's twisted chords, swelled up harmonies like the Beatles' or the Beach Boys', the Velvet Underground's lo-fi hymns... Some of us saw some meaning in those, a kind of guideline to our lives as the only way to escape generalised lobotomy. Each one of us will see it their own way. TV Guests chose to keep on spreading out the word, with their guitar in hand.
Salvation pop, that's their thing.
Listen once to their album to see their true nature revealed : their teenage years were spent deciphering records leaflets credits with their minds stuck for months to all the "Jean Genie" and "Once in a Lifetime" that were made. In a word, they're real good guys.
The band, formed around the duo JB aka Kiwiboy and JM Guest, start things in 2004. First, a name. Fans of Tony Visconti and of the Monochrome Set, they will be the TV Guests. Strong with the will to pursue this glorious pop lineage which revealed them to themselves, they are well aware that a band can only survive if they compose their own tracks.
Very naturally, the first songs of the band are created, combining the rage of The Who with harmonic skills of the Zombies and the rhythmic flexibility of the Talking Heads. Now that the tunes are here, the band then completed by Arturo Bandini on drums and Syd Alexander on keyboards, tours in all the existing venues of Paris (Le Truskel, le divan du Monde, la Flèche d'or, le Bus Palladium...) thus allowing them to refine and practice their compositions on stage and to give a definitive aspect to the show which will be the basis for their 1st album. In parallel, their name and stage act starts to get well renown all around town...
This recognition will lead to take part in "Ketchup & Marmelade" by Mélanie Bauer, cult radio show on Oui FM. Then comes the recording of the first album. From these sessions during which the band plays all the key roles (producer, sound engineer, arranger, multi-instrumentalists...) emerge 13 tracks: "Okay Today", the 1st album by TV Guests is born. The result : a explosion of colours serving a noble, human and stylish pop music in which the lightness of "Under The Rain" faces the Velvetian trance of "Your Drug", where the vintage guitars telescope electronica. For the duo know that pure rock and ethereal pop are only the two sides of the same coin named POP Music.
Critics unanimously rate the album as "excellent" and "Kitchen Floor", genuine pop jewel at the crossroads of Mercury Rev, Daniel Johnston and the Beatles of "We Can Work It Out", starts being aired on various radios and generates a huge Myspace excitement (+ 120 000 visits). A video for the song is directed by Jonathan Millet, and increases the song's and the album's successes. In the end : TV Guests sign with Vision Alternative, which can be surprising given that the label tends to focus more on electro, and the album "Okay today" is distributed by PIAS.
Eventually comes the time to record the second album, where the TV Guests intend to take their space odysseys even further. Then, they're blessed with the joining of Aliplays on machines who will also produce the new opus. The best way for the band to combine their musical vision between tradition and modernity while transcending musical styles. Electro, jazz, rock... no limits can stop them and they're now ready for the big jump. Remember the good old days of 1967. With the search for the perfect pop song always on their mind. The true one, the one that holds a mirror for you. And this is simply rare enough to share the adventure with them all.
