Biography

OXAÏ ROURA is a multi-instrumentalist composer, vocalist and searcher in ethnomusicology.

Learning music starts from a very young age for him as his drummer Dad teaches him to play the drums and percussions when he's 3.

Half-cast with « Afro-Eurasiamazonian » origins, fond of sacred African polyrhythmic sounds, he travels to rain with some of the greatest percussion master of the planet (Famoudou KONATE, Mamady KEITA, and Maré SANOGO - among others - train him to Mandingues rhythmes and vocals while Orlando POLEO & Martha GALLARAGA train him to Yorubas Afro-Cuban percussions (congas and batas). Respectful of tradition but open to the contemporary world, he collaborates in the 90s with bands of very different musical styles (Metal, Reggae, Jazz, Contemporary, Salsa, Electro etc...).

In 2003, he composes and auto produces his first solo work (a 6-track CD allowing him to manifest his skills for singing, programming machines, playing percussions, guitar and bass) titled « THE EXU EXPERIENCE » which officially marks ythe birth of the new style he created : ATABAQUES' N' BASS, combination of mystical Afro Brazilian rhythm and electronic sounds. This record was rewarded by Fondation Pierre Verger (Bahia-Brazil) which used it as a soundtrack for the official ceremony of acknowledgement of the foundation by the UNESCO as part of Humanity's World Heritage.

Early 2004, OXAÏ ROURA creates THE SPIRITUAL HERITAGE ORKESTRA combining Afro-Cuban and electro sounds (a musical genre he named BEMBELEKTRO). Gustavo Ovalles former percussionist of Omar Sosa is part of the adventure. After many concerts this formation releases in 2006 (on the South-American continent) a musical Dvd titled "SPIRITUAL HERITAGE PART.1 Secrets of Afrika (Live) » gathering the best parts the band produced on stage.

That same year he create collective ESOTERYTHME mixing West-African, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian rhythms and vocals. This ensemble will notably open for acts by DAVID GUETTA and TARMAC.

In 2008, OXAÏ ROURA comes back with a new musical project : the CD AFRO AMAZONIAN SPIRIT; it is the first public manifestation of a new original style he created : AFROAMAZONIKA (a original combination of West-African and Afro-Amazonian rhythms and spiritual vocals with sounds from the electronica scene). Some of the instrumental musics are meant as a soundtrack for the dance performance of company AZAMIAH, while the songs deal with themes as various as spirituality in its v
different forms, the necessity to take care of planet Earth, the likely future of Africa and the Amazonian area...

This record will please all the fans of strange rhythms and positive electronic vibrations ...
