Rocky evokes by turns wild expanses and encounters by means of a real opening both in the styles tackled (from the Italian crooner ballad A Spasso to the disco A Life of Ease) and the arrangements upsetting the patterns The Married Monk had endeavoured to develop so far. Drums and machines equally share the rhythmic sections and guitars often give way to keyboards.
Finally, Yann Tiersen brings his sensibility to the strings of Roma Amor and Hollidays, supported in this song by the cello of Joey Burns from Calexico.
The Married Monk thus develops a vintage but definitely modern sound which proves that pop music, for Christian is a true songwriter, can try out new ideas without disowning its origins. The most relevant example of this is undoubtedly the incredible version of Robert Wyatt's Sea Song, which they had already played on stage and which, more than a mere cover version, is a real tribute to him.
