Chance meetings or a certain favourable set of circumstances can often result in particularly inspiring music. Gaguik Mouradian was in the audience when Claude Tchamitchian gave a solo performance in Erevan in 1994. When Gaguik recorded his CD for solo kamanche (émouvance, emv 1006, 1998), the double bass player was in the studio, and in between two takes, he invited the kamanche player to take up his bow for a trial improvisation session : a novel situation, a new approach, a totally innovatory pairing of two instruments, neither of which either by the way it's made, played, or used, or by its sound and tone, was predestined to make music with the other.
So this contemporary form of musical expression was born, with two musicians of totally different backgrounds bringing their talent to this unique improvisation. Jazz and traditional music are more often than not just strung together, but in this session the commitment of both musicians goes as far as possible : it's not just a simple exchange, a whole new sound vocabulary is invented afresh, inspired by the inheritance of each player and its impact on him.
Memory in this case does not mean resorting to a certain repertoire or tradition; the musicians' common path reveals a universal dimension that had to be there.
