Kaboom

Description

As he begun his career in the « 80’s Rennes’ wave, under the name of Ubik, Dj Le Clown more usualy known now on that avatar for his Mashup remixer and video dj work, couldn’t resist remixing his favourite bands and songs from that period. Musicians he played and had fun with, in thoses times of creativity and crazyness, that founded the reputation of the breton city for decades. We asked DJ Le Clown to tell us more about Kaboom …

Dominic Sonic / When my tears run cold:
Let’s start by the end of the eighties ! 1989 Dominic Sonic - ex Kalashnikov – the punkoïd black side of Rennes- gave us a pure ears-orgasm with « When my tears run cold ».
The whole idea of making a Rennes special came from doing this remix…

Thx to Sonic, Thanks to Mark Hollander too…Hope that mix could lead Crammed to release Dominic Sonic's 1st LP in digital ! before that holy day, this mix, is the only track containing some originals "When my tears run cold " dammed great samples ! So…Cheerz

Marquis de Sade / Cancer & Drugs:
Impossible to do any references to the 80's Rennes New wave, without talking about the band who made its History ! Marquis de Sade, was the sparkle that put the town and the whole country in flame ! Cancer & Drugs was on their last album "Rue de Siam", The band splitted about 6 months after the release of this now legendary opus. I kept this song as fresh as I could, for you to say, the target was more to make it playable on nowadays « average » dancefloors & radios, I couldn ‘t resist to keep it the shape of a song.

Thx to Philippe Pascal & Frank Darcel, singer & guitar player of MDS for giving me the great pleasure of remixing their song. Thx too to their producer, Philippe Conrath from Africolor.com, for giving me the right to do it.

Sax Pustuls / La dance du Marsupilami:
Philippe Herpin Sax player and leader of Sax Pustuls is a Kind of Mad Professor. Him and his partner Daniel Paboeuf used to play saxophones with Marquis de Sade on tour and on the albums. Sax Pustuls was at first a Happening band, their first gig at the 2nd Transmusicales (1980) was the opportunity to melt 20 masked musicians and performers of any kind ( !) in a concentrate but brilliante appearence. Philippe decided to make this single « La dance du Marsupilami » in a minimal electro version, with Nicole Calloc’h as singer. That is my favourite version, I like the voices, there’re not too much arrangements. It has this little perfume of Pop Naivety, that I still love to smell… My youth maybe ?

Marquis de Sade / Conrad Veidt :
This mix was originaly done for Optical Records. Conrad Veit is one of my favourite songs of MDS in their first Album « Dantzig Twist ». This is a Noisy one, I must say ; my Geoff Dugmore on drum period at his highest level !

Ubik / Kakikouka :
Well How could I forget this song, as Ubik myself !? I found it fun to redo Kakikouka with the machines we where missing at the time. Sony is gonna release soon ( !)« Surf » Ubik’s first album, good occasion to listen to David Lord’s version of Ubik 1st cry of war : Kakikouka !

Les Nus / Le mime hurlant:
First I’d like to Thank the legal sucessors of Jacques Prévert and Marcel Carné and Pathé, for giving me the right to use samples of the great classic of French Cinema : « Les Enfants du Paradis » starring Jean Louis Barrault and the fantastic Arletty.
« Les Nus » were the most ephemere- one album only- band of the Rennes’s wave, and certainly one of the most promising one. Dargelos their singer, told me once that this song was created, thinking of the Character of Baptiste in the film. As a great fan of this movie myself I couldn’t resist using it ! That’s a brute version, I did a more sophisticated one, but I finaly prefered this one, So I’ve decided to keep the other mix as a free bonus track for this Kaboom Mini-Album…
